Let's face it, we ALL (including me) have down days. And running a business, I find that I'm not always afforded the luxury of wallowing in despair, especially if I have a client commitment or speaking engagement. Fortunately, I figured out a way to INSTANTLY boost my mood so that I could keep my day moving and today I'm going to share it with you too! Here's my Instant Happiness "trick."
I use to teach this exercise years ago to trauma/sexual abuse survivors, but anyone can use it if they need an "instant pick-me-up." Create an "INSTANT HAPPINESS KIT." You do this by filling a box with items that put an INSTANT smile on your face. Items can be your: favorite comedy, favorite happy movie, video, essential oils, favorite happy song. You can even put a pre-paid gift certificate to a spa/massage. I encourage you to pre-pay and put these items into a box AHEAD of time. Otherwise it defeats the purpose of an instant happiness kit. Why?
When we're down it's challenging to think of all the things that can INSTANTLY turn around our mood. However, if you have those items in a DESIGNATED box, it's easy to remember to go to the "instant happiness box" to pick something to boost your mood. The goal of the box is to VALIDATE yourself instantly with items YOU selected. Also, if you pre-pay for items like a massage gift certificate and put it in the box, you don't have to worry about coming up with the money later. The goal is to eliminate ALL excuses that would block you from experiencing "instant happiness" in that moment...
However, I have to point out, I have seen people try to create variations of this exercise by NOT creating a box, or by trying to buy the items when they are actually in the sad or depressed state. This often creates more stress and less than ideal outcomes, so please try not to do that. The goal of the happiness kit is to be PRO-ACTIVE in managing your "down days." Hope this helps?!
